Under 10 Hurling school

The U10 Management & Coaches are running three intensive coaching sessions for our under 10 hurlers.

Who can attend this school:

We are targeting players born in 1999 & 2000. Players born in 2001 are also welcome if deemed strong enough by U8 coaches/parents. There is no charge for attendance.

What are we trying to achieve:

  • Increase the basic skill level of players through intensive sessions
  • Get new players into the club
  • Increase parental involvement by giving pointers on player skills and home practise

Each player will need to bring the following each Sat:

  1. Helmet.
  2. Hurley
  3. Shin Guards (Very Important)
  4. Hurling gear.
  5. Drink and snack.
  6. Jacket & Runners in case we need to go indoors

New Players:

For the 3 sessions, we will provide helmets and hurleys for any newcomers that may like to attend but we have limited stock so please let us know well in advance so we can put these aside for you.We would like to urge you to inform any friends or neighbours that may not be hurling today and would like to start.

Basic Skills.

The following skills we will be focusing on are as follows.

  • How to hold the Hurley correctly – Players to use dominant hand on top
  • How to catch a ball using the correct grip – Overhead, Chest, Low.
  • How to catch a ball correctly using protection.
  • Correct way to rise the ball – Roll lift and Jab lift, when to use each.
  • Striking from hand/ground – Strong and weaker sides
  • Lift and strike using targets
  • The correct technique for hand passing.
  • Blocking an opponent down on full striking position.
  • Ground block - blocking an opponent down on a ground shot.
  • Flicking the ball from the ground and off the hurley
  • Batting
  • How to hook an opponent when striking.
  • Use of shoulder clash/tussling
  • How to solo run with the ball.
  • Field positions and general play.
  • General and basic rules.
  • Warm ups & warm down’s - why do we do these

Regarding the sessions we will have at least 5 coaches at all times during each Saturday. We will also have some members of the senior club to help out and give some advice to our boys. Some very special guests will also attend.

To all the lads that are attending training at the moment, they are all very enthusiastic and love coming to training. These sessions will be a great opportunity for the lads to improve their skills. We will be organising a mini blitz on the last day for all involved, hoping to have approx 4 teams between ourselves. Probably 9/10 per team.

Parents and Guardians.

This is where we need your help. At the end of our 3rd session we would like you to attend a final day feedback session at 12.30 on June 6.

We will give the basic knowledge to you all on how to keep your child interested in hurling and what they can do outside of training to improve their skills. Any questions you may have, we will be glad to answer.

Lets hope these sessions will be enjoyed by all the lads, and we hope that their skill level will have improved by the end of the training school.

We know they will enjoy each Saturday, as it stands they don’t want to leave the field after training on Saturday mornings as it is.
