Under 14 hurling North final 2010 - Sat 15th Aug 2010

Nenagh Eire Og 3-07 Newport/Ballinahinch 1-05

Nenagh Eire Og U-14 hurlers - North 'A' Champions. Back row: (l to r) John Manley (Selector), Ian McNamara, Jack Molamphy, John Cahalan, Shane Hennessy, Anthony Walsh, Brian Tuite, Gavin O'Connor, Christy McLoughlin (Selector), Andrew Coffey, Brian Flynn, Niall O'Gorman, Aodhan Geaney (Captain), Jack Sheedy, Robbie Ryan (Manager), Philip Hickey, Eamonn O'Brien (Selector). Kneeling: Aaron Hogan, Chris Donaldson, Liam Maher, Craig Hilmi, Connie O'Reilly, Dominic O'Brien, Jake Morris, Adam Healy, Alex Jones, Brian Slattery, Conor Ryan.

Sharper Nenagh retain U14 ‘A’ title
Shane Hennessy’s two goal blast, mid way through the second half, helped Nenagh Éire Óg retain their North U-14 ‘A’ Hurling title when overcoming a defiant Newport/Ballinahinch on Saturday afternoon.
Played in front of a fine attendance, Nenagh’s efficiency in front of goal proved the difference. They shot seven wides, (one in the first half) as opposed to 12 for Newport/Ballinahinch which in the end proved to be one of the defining moments in the destination of the title.
But overall, the holders deserved their win as they were the more sharper up front with Shane Hennessy receiving great assistance from John Cahalan and Jack Molamphy while Philip Hickey and Conor Ryan did well at midfield. Andrew Coffey was a tower of strength at centre back as fellow defenders Aodhan Geaney and Jake Morris were always in the thick of things curtailing much of the Newport/Ballinahinch attack.
Prior to the game, both teams stood to the National Anthem, played by lone piper, Joe Barry. Once the game got underway, John Cahalan opened the scoring for Nenagh after two minutes. Newport / Ballinahinch replied almost immediately through Davy Gleeson and after with Conor Floyd began well at centre back along with Pa Ryan at midfield, the Combination increased their lead with another Davy Gleeson point on eight minutes.
In fact, Newport might have stretched their lead but failure to convert chances was to be their downfall. Not a problem for Nenagh at the other end, as Shane Hennessy replied with a point after 13 minutes. Two minutes later, a clearance from their half suddenly found Brian Flynn in front of goal and who then got free of his marker to put the ball past Dean Foley. Three minutes later, Conor Ryan added a point giving the home side a four-point lead.
That goal for Nenagh was hard luck on Newport keeper, Dean Foley who made two good saves up to then. And despite falling behind, his team battled on with Rob Houlihan doing well at full back. Pa Ryan and Conor Floyd remained defiant in the mid sector and centre forward, Jason Ryan tried hard to break down the tight marking Nenagh defence. But scores were hard to come by except for a Conor Floyd long range free. But with half time approaching Nenagh managed the final score of the half when Shane Hennessy left the half time score reading Nenagh 1-4 Newport/Ballinahinch 0-3.
One minute into the second half, Pa Ryan narrowed the gap to three points. Both sides missed chances and we had to wait four minutes for a Shane Hennessy free to help Nenagh regain their fourpoint lead. Davy Gleeson replied with a similar score for the challengers as the anticipation of an exciting finish was beginning to emerge.
That idea was soon cast aside when Shane Hennessy took the game by the scruff of the neck. In the 39th minute he weaved through the Newport defence before blasting the ball past Foley. One minute later he extended his teams lead with a point before grabbing a second goal three minutes later. Conor Ryan added a point to leave Nenagh eleven points clear with seven minutes remaining. But as expected, Newport/Ballinahinch made a number of raids on the Nenagh goal and were finally rewarded with a Pa Ryan goal, five minutes from time. It was too little too late though. Nenagh had enough done and they held on to collect their ninth title much to the joy of their supporters.

U16 hurling North final - 2009 Nenagh Éire Óg 4-12 Roscrea 2-7

Nenagh Éire Óg completed a hat-trick of North Under 16 ‘A’ titles after a hard fought win over a determined Roscrea side on Monday evening. Centre forward Mark Tuite was the key man for Nenagh and despite being double marked he was a constant thorn in the side of the Roscrea defence. With both teams dropping an extra man into defence, the opening half was tight with neither side looking entirely convincing as they   looked to gain a foothold. After two missed frees from Roscrea, it was Tuite who latched on to a Darragh Walsh pass to fire over and hand the initiative to Nenagh. At the other end Michael Campion took over the free taking duties and promptly levelled the scores. On the tenth minute Nenagh went two clear with a free and 65 from Mark Tuite and they sought to make the most of the stiff breeze at their backs. Roscrea’s Michael Ryan   found space and fired over from forty yards before Nenagh’s Brendan O’Brien benefited from some slack defending to put his side two up again. Roscrea’s diminutive Conor Sheedy picked off a great point after his initial effort at a free was batted straight back to him and the large Roscrea following sensed that there might have been a shock on the cards. But Nenagh’s star man Tuite had other ideas and when he slipped effortlessly inside the Roscrea cover shortly before the break there was only going to be one outcome. Sure enough he raised a green flag with a well placed shot past Daryl Ryan. To their credit Roscrea rallied well and a sustained period in the Nenagh half resulted in a good point from   Edwin Simmons but their good work was undone when Jack Ryan misjudged a high ball and Mark Tuite fired over to give Nenagh a six point interval lead. Roscrea’s Jack Feeney opened the second half scoring after a quickly taken sideline but again it was Tuite who lead the Nenagh charge. He hit a free after Barry Heffernan was pushed by Shane Davis and then his strength and speed twice got him into position to land fine points to open up a sevenpoint lead. The impressive Sean Geaney took a pass from Tuite and hit another as Nenagh began to dominate possession. Conor Bergin did find the range for Roscrea but in this crucial period his forward colleagues struggled to get change from Heffernan,   Gubbins and Quinn in the Nenagh full back line. In a three-minute spell midway through the second half Nenagh finally killed off the gallant Roscrea challenge. Brendan O’Brien’s first time pull on a breaking ball from a sideline found the bottom corner of the net before midfielder Joe Geaney finished in style after fielding Sean Geaney’s delivery unchallenged. Roscrea’s pride kept them driving forward and their efforts were rewarded with two late goals from Jack Ryan. The first a thunderous strike from a twenty one yard free and the second a similarly rasping strike from play which flew high past Kevin Flynn in the Nenagh goals. Nenagh still kept the scoreboard ticking through a Sean Geaney 65 and another Tuite free after he was   dragged down. Niall Kennedy completed the champions scoring with a   kicked effort before the industrious Jack Feeney got a consolation for Roscrea.

U14 hurling County final - 2009

Nenagh Eire Óg ............................. 1-6
Durlas Óg........................................ 1-5

What a memorable day for our U14s in the ‘Field of Legends’ Semple Stadium when capturing our 6th County U14 hurling title and our first since 2003. Ever since our galling last minute defeats in the U12 Hurling and Football County Finals of 2007, there has been a sense of unfinished business about this team which ultimately drove them on to victory in a thriller against a gallant and sporting Durlas Og team.

The team were very relaxed and got off to a good start with points from placed balls by Barry Heffernan and James Mackey. Conor Lanigan struck a Durlas Óg goal in the 9th minute and followed up a minute later with a point. David Fogarty also pointed for Durlas Og to leave the scoreboard reading Durlas Óg 1-2 Nenagh Eire Óg 0-2. Our team captain, Michael Collins scored a great point in the 18th minute when he gained possession in his own half and soloed twenty metres before striking between the posts from 60 metres. Conor Lanigan replied with a Durlas Óg point before Conor Ryan got in behind the Durlas Og defence and hit a screamer of a shot just wide of the upright. Killian Gleeson, who was outstanding from the word go, pointed a free from 70 metres on the stroke of half time to leave us behind by 1 -3 to 0-4 at the interval.

Nenagh began the second half well and started to dictate the play. Shane Hennessy picked a ball in midfield and soloed through the defence before hitting a fine point from 40 meters. Durlas Og dangerman Conor Lanigan replied with 2 points to extend their lead out to 3 points. Barry Heffernan managed to get in behind the tight Durlas Og defence to strike a goal much to the delight of the large Nenagh following; 1-5 each. It was end to end stuff from now with hurling at its best with some marvellous fielding and striking from both teams as they went for broke with not a hint of a foul stroke. With both defences on top, it looked like the game would go to extra time until Michael Collins, whos move to midfield proved to be an inspired one, latched in to a ball about 40 meters out under the old stand and hit a beautiful shot over the bar for what proved to be the winning score. Durlas Og had one more chance but Philip Hickey cleared upfield and the final whistle sounded to the delight and relief of everyone from Nenagh. So ended a magnificent contest between two marvellous teams that will always be remembered by those present. It was a courageous and tenacious display by Nenagh against a skilful Durlas Og team that were most sporting and gracious in defeat.

The team returned to town amid much noise and colour and had a memorable parade through the busy streets. The credit for bringing this panel to North & County Final honours and indeed to the Feile All Ireland U14 semifinal must go to manager Greg Browne and his selectors John Tucker and Liam Quinn, they set high standards that ultimately lead to the ultimate success in the County Final. Also thanks to all the backroom team that helped out in particular Bartley Ryan who provided first aid on the day. Special thanks to those that decorated the town with flags, it was much appreciated. Thanks to Martin Morris and his staff in the Hibernian Inn for the catering after the game. The club would like to wish Jack O’Brien every success in his forthcoming knee surgery, we are all looking forward to having Jack back in action with the team next year.

EIRE ÓG TOPS IN THRILLER

Nenagh Eire Óg ............................. 1-6 Durlas Óg........................................ 1-5

Two years ago Nenagh Eire Óg left Semple Stadium disappointed after having lost the County Under 12 hurling final to a last minute point to Holycross-Ballycahill. It was a different story last Saturday as an injury time point gave them a dramatic win over Durlas Óg in a thrilling County Under 14 'A' final at the "Field of Legends". This was a fabulous contest with the result in doubt right up to the full time whistle. When it looked as if the game would go to extra time up came wing back Michael Collins in the 2nd minute of injury time to strike over the winning point.

Nenagh Eire Óg had the better of the early exchanges but once Conor Lanigan struck a Durlas Óg goal in the 9th minute it was the Thurles boys that were on top for the remainder of the half. Nenagh opened the scoring with a point from a '65' by Barry Heffernan in the 2nd minute and five minutes later they increased their lead with a pointed free from James Mackey. Durlas Óg's influential centre forward Conor Lanigan received an injury in the 8th minute and this forced their mentors to switch him to corner forward with Graham Maher going into the centre. This move proved inspired as a minute later Lanigan got on the end of a delivery from midfield to flick it to the back of the Nenagh net and he followed this with a point from play and David Fogarty also pointed to leave the scoreboard reading Durlas Óg 1-2 Nenagh Eire Óg 0-2. Eire Óg's Michael Collins scored a great point in the 18th minute when he gained possession in his own half and soloed twenty metres before striking between the posts from 60 metres on the Ardan Ui Riain stand side. Lanigan replied with a Durlas Óg point before Eire Óg had a great chance of a goal but corner forward Gary Ryan saw his effort shave the upright and go wide. Killian Gleeson brilliantly pointed an Eire Óg free from 70 metres in the 25th minute to leave his team in arrears by 1-3 to 0-4 at the interval.

Eire Óg had the first score of the second half when midfielder Shane Hennessy had a point to leave the minimum between the teams. Durlas Óg replied with two Conor Lanigan points and the teams were level after ten minutes of the half when Barry Heffernan got in behind the Durlas Óg defence to finish to the net. The tempo of the game increased and it was end to end stuff from here until the full time whistle. Both teams had scoring opportunities but the defences were on top with Donnacha Quinn and Killian Gleeson outstanding in the centre of the Eire Óg defence while Durlas Óg's Jack Lineen and Ronan Maher got in an amount of good defending and cleared many a dangerous situation. The next score which proved to be the winning one didn't arrive until the 2nd minute of injury time when attacking Eire Óg wing back Michael Collins received possession some 40 metres from the Durlas Óg goal and his strike went straight between the posts to give his team a one point advantage with time almost up. Durlas Óg got one further chance but the Eire Óg defence cleared and the final whistle sounded to end a fabulous contest.

This was a magnificent win for Nenagh Eire Óg who had to dig deep for their success. They had many top class displays none more so than Donnacha Quinn who gave a very impressive performance at full back, Killian Gleeson was a commanding figure at centre back while wing back Michael Collins scored two great points. Shane Hennessy was always involved in the action at midfield and Barry Heffernan was an excellent leader of the attack where James Mackey and Paul O Laoire were also prominent.

Durlas Óg were bitterly disappointed at the final whistle and who could blame them. They came so close to victory. Best on day were Jack Lineen, Ronan Maher, Brian Hanrahan, Kevin Dunne, Graham Maher and top scorer Conor Lanigan who finished with a tally of 1-4.

U14 hurling North final - 2009

On Saturday last, we defeated Toomevara in the North Final by 8-17 to 1-3. This was a day that everything went right for us with Toomevara not getting the bounce of the ball on the day. It was a good team effort led by Michael Collins as captain, with every player playing a role and 10 players getting on the scoresheet. Preparations will now start for the County semi final versus the South Champions which is scheduled to take place on the weekend of September 11th.

In terrible conditions, a very good Moneygall team beat us by 4 pts in a very tight game after extra time. Moneygall equalised in the second minute of injury time to take the game into extra time. The lads fought courageously against a bigger Moneygall team and just lost out in the last few minutes. Well done to the lads and the selectors Ger, TP, Noel, Enda and Phil. The Great Good Friday.......Taken from the website of Kilmacud Crokes

U15s travel to Nenagh

One of the best yet.  Of all the country trips the current under 15’s have taken the excursion to Nenagh on 10th April 2009 has to be near top of the list.

Assembling in Glenalbyn at 9.00am the party hit McDonagh Park Nenagh around 11.30. Waiting was former Tipperary All-Ireland captain, Tommy Dunne, from nearby Toomevarra.  A top class training session followed where the boys were introduced to several new techniques.  Lunch was laid on by the host Eire Og club and at 2.30pm the ball was thrown in on the splendid surface of the main North Tipperary ground.

The match that followed showcased all that is best about the Crokes youngsters.  Against a strong home under 16 side with ambitions to win the Tipperary championship and featuring five players who played in Nenagh’s 2008 county minor final win, the Kilmacud lads gave their all, contesting every ball.  Eire Og took the initiative and were three points to one up with just over fifteen minutes gone.  By the twentieth minute it was 0-4 to 0-2.  An Eire Og goal seemed to be the turning point but Crokes fought back, owned the remainder of the half and were 1-5 to 0-5 in arrears when referee, Michael McGrath, sounded the short whistle.

At half time another treat was in store.  Tipperary All-Ireland winner and Nenagh clubman, John Heffernan, who had been keeping a watching brief, spoke to the team and gave them the benefit of his insight.  The second half was every bit as compelling as the first with the game flowing from end to end.  Despite having a slight upper hand for most of the half, the concession of an early goal probably cost the visitors the match and it ended 2-9 to 0-10.  On such a fulfilling day the result was incidental and the Crokes group set out for home wondering how the day could have been bettered.  To all the people in Nenagh who welcomed us so warmly and made it so mile buiochas.

Squad: Caolan Conway, Philip O’Shea, Daibhid Corish, Shane Moran, Louis O’Sullivan, Robert Murphy, James Murphy, Conor O’Dwyer, Conor Devins, Nico Salvino (0-2), Matthew Geraghty (0-3, f-1), Tomas Barry, Neil Gorey, Barry Horan, Matthew McNicholas (0-5, f-2, 65-1), Conor J O’Dwyer and Donal Keane.

Under 16A North Hurling Final - Nenagh Eire Og 2-13 Kilruane 2-10 - 4th Oct 2008

Our u/16 team produced their best performance of the year to win the north title against Kilruane in a great game played in Puckane last Saturday.

u16 north final

This game had everything- commitment, passion and skill displayed by both teams. Kilruane were first to score with a point from a free. However, Tommy Heffernan was very accurate from frees and with Cronan Gleeson scoring two points and Mark Tuite and Daire Quinn adding points Eire Og started to get on top. The first goal in the game was scored by Eire Og. Joe Geaney won possession in the half back line and his clearance went all the way to the net. At half time Eire Og led on a scoreline of 1-8 to Kilruane 0-5. A feature of the first half was the display of Sean Geaney at full back. He had great support from Donnacha Heffernan and Oisin Mc Glynn in the full back line. Kilruane had the aid of the breeze in the second half but found it hard to get scores. Eire Og went further ahead when a great move involving Tommy Heffernan and Daire Quinn resulted in the latter scoring a great goal. Eire Og were now seven points up but Kilruane reduced the lead almost immediately with a goal. Points by David Hickey and Mark Tuite increased Eire Og’s lead again but another goal by Kilruane saw the lead reduced to two points. However, the Eire Og lads were not going to be denied a North title. This team had lost at the semi final stage at under twelve and fourteen and were not going to be denied a third time. Playing with great skill and showing great determination the Eire Og lads finished very strongly. At the final whistle there was three points between the teams. Eire Og 2-13 Kilruane 2-10.

u16 presentation Geaneys u16 team

Well done to captain Kevin Kennedy who played very well. He was well assisted at midfield by Mark Tuite. Our half backs of Joe Geaney, Kevin Gubbins and Eddie Darcy worked very hard all through the game. The half forward line of Tommy Heffernan , Daire Quinn and Paul Slattery worked well as a unit and were ably assisted by Cronan Gleeson, Daryl Mc Cormack and David Hickey. Mark Higginbotham and Darragh Walsh who came on in the second half also played their part in a great victory. In addition to those who played in the final there are another seven lads who have trained very hard and are very much part of this team. They are Dean Ray, Andrew Weinmann, Paddy Sheehan, Niall Kennedy, Stephen Nagle, Bob O Brien and Adam Grattan.

u16 presentation

Under12A North Hurling Final - Nenagh Eire Og 3-05 Roscrea 3-06 - 16th Aug 2008

There was heartbreak for our u/12 team who lost the North Final by a point to Roscrea. This game was a great advert for juvenile hurling with great skill and commitment shown by both teams. Eire Og played against the wind in the first half and after ten minutes were ahead by four points to no score. However, Roscrea started to come more into the game and scored a good goal. They added two more goals and four points in the first half to leave them ahead by eight points at half time with a score line of Roscrea 3-4 Eire Og  0-5. Our lads started the second half with determined fashion and put the Roscrea backs under severe pressure.  Slowly we reduced the lead and with about ten minutes to go had drawn level having scored  three good goals. Things looked good for Eire Og at this stage but Roscrea scored a point from a free to go a point ahead. Our lads tried very hard to get the equaliser but were unable to do so and Roscrea held out for a great win.  Great credit must go to our team to the effort they put in in trying to win the final. Aaron Hogan made some great saves particularly in the second half. He had great support in the full back line in Gavin O Connor, Aodhan Geaney and Brian Flynn. Our half back line of Oisin Ryan, Andrew Coffey and John Cahalan also played solidly and as a result the backs prevented Roscrea from getting any goals in the second half. Our midfield pairing of Philip Hickey and Anthony Walsh together with our forwards Conor Ryan, Shane Hennessy, Jack Sheedy, Ben Banaghan, Adam Coady, Jack Molamphy and Adam Healy all played their part in a great game. Other members of the panel who played their part in getting to the final include: Brian Tuite,Craig Hilmi,  Adam Healy,  Niall O Gorman,  Dominic O Brien, Liam Maher,  Arron Duggan, Jack Kavanagh, Connie O Reilly, Mark Maher, Keelan Nevin,  Dylan Kennedy, Adam Carey. We wish Roscrea the best of luck in the county semi final. A speial thanks to Team Manager Eamon O Brien and to his selectors Phil Hennessy, Christy Mc Loughlin and Robbie Ryan for the the time and effort they gave during the year.

Under 12A football County final- Nenagh Eire Og 1-01 Clonmel 3-04 - Sat 31st May 2008

Nenagh Eire Og were defeated by Clonmel Commercials in the final played in Semple Stadium on Saturday 31st May. The final score Eire Og 1-1 Clonmel Commercials 3-4. The scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the game. Indeed if we availed of the opportunities we had in the first half the game we may have won the game. At half time we found ourselves down by a point 1-2 to 1-1. Conor Ryan scoring a great goal to put us two points ahead early in the game. However, Commercials scored a lucky goal to take the lead and despite the best efforts by all we were unable to draw level. Our boys tried very hard but found it difficult to get scores in the second half. Commercials scored 2-2 during that period to win the game convincingly.
Well done to all the boys on the Eire Og on the panel for their efforts during the football championship and to their mentors Eamon O Brien, Phil Hennessy, Christy Mc Loughlin and Robbie Ryan.

U/12 footballers qualify for county final.

We qualified for the county final after a great win over Durles Og in the semi final. This was a great game of football and our lads showed great commitment to overcome a physically stronger Durles Og team. Durles Og opened the scoring with a point but some great passing by our forwards resulted in Conor Ryan scoring a goal. This was followed by good points by Aodhan Geaney and Conor Ryan from a free to leave Eire Og leading by 1-2 to 0-1 coming up to half time. However, Durles Og scored a late goal to leave Eire Og leading by a point at half time. Eire Og’s goalkeeper Jack Sheedy made some great saves in the first half to ensure that Eire Og were still leading at half time. Early in the second half we were four pts ahead when Adam Healy scored a great goal. Durles Og tried hard to reduce the score and scored three points. Strong defending by Andrew Coffey and Anthony Walsh and the rest of the backs kept Durles Og from scoring a goal. Points by Adam Healy and Conor Ryan for Eire Og left the final score Eire Og 2-4 Durles Og 1-4.

Eire Og win North under 12A football final

Nenagh Eire Og defeated Inane Rovers by one point in the final played in Toomevara on Friday evening May 9th last.

This was a great game of football played with great determination and commitment shown by both teams. Eire Og were first to score when Conor Ryan got a point after a great solo run. The lead did not last long as Inane Rovers started to play some good football and were rewarded with a goal. Alan Coady playing full forward for Eire Og was starting to get a lot of possession and soon converted the chances by scoring 1-1 to put Eire Og two points ahead. Inane replied with three points before half time to leave the half time score Eire Og 1-2 Inane Rovers 1-3.

The Eire Og team were soon level within a few minutes of the restart when Adam Healy got a great point. This was followed by another great point by Adam Coady to put Eire Og ahead by a point. The last quarter was very exciting and the Eire Og boys came under severe pressure but some great defending by our backs kept Inane scoreless in the second half. At the final whistle there was great jubilation when Oisin Ryan (captain) was presented with the Michael Mc Grath Cup. Hard luck to Inane Rovers who played so well on the night.

Under 16 Football semi final 29/04/2008

Nenagh Eire Og 2-4 Burgess 5-3

Eire Og lost the under 16 Football semi final to Burgess on Tuesday 29th April.  We started the game slowly and found ourselves 2 pts behind early in the first half. But some great teamwork by our lads resulted in Cronan Gleeson scoring a good goal. Further points by Kevin Kennedy and Mark Tuite gave our lads a half time lead of Eire Og 1-4 Burgess 2-0. The second half started with Burgess slowly getting on top and going into a 1 pt lead. However Darragh Quinn scored a good goal for Eire Og and we found ourselves leading by 2 pts. Unfortunately we were unable to add to this score for the remainder of the game despite having good possession. Burgess greater physical strength started to tell and within a short period we conceded 3 goals. The final score Eire Og 2-4 Burgess 5-3. Thanks to the entire panel and to the mentors Ciaran Morris, Kevin Flannery and Robbie Ryan.

U12A Football semi final 23/04/2008

Nenagh Eire Og 1-3 Ballina 1-2

After a tight game in Newport against a very good Ballina team, we reached the North U12A final. Ballina were quick to settle and got an early goal with almost their first attack. Adam Coady was proving a handful for Ballina and he scored a very good point followed by a goal from Shane Hennessy who ran on well to gather a through ball. Adam Coady and Conor Ryan added points to put us 1-3 to 1-0 up at HT. Ballina owned the majority of possession in the second half and pulled back 2 points. In a very exciting finish, vital blockdowns by Conor Ryan and Philip Hickey ensured victory by 1pt, 1-3 to 1-2. Well done to both teams for a very exciting game.
