camogie u14 2008

These girls made history last Sunday in Dolla by becoming the 1st team from the Camoige Club to win a County Final. There was great relief, joy and a few tears when referee Martin Griffin blew the final whistle and ended our wait for this first title.   It was a very windy Dolla that greeted the girls but the pitch was in excellent condition considering the weather over the weekend. An injury concern to Shannon Moran meant it was the same team as the semi-final with Coleen O'Brien staring wing Forward. Jessica lost the toss and Holycross chose to play with the wind in the 1st half. This is where the game was won as the the team from one to sixteen in that half defended, hooked, blocked, chased everything that came there way. Holycross were first to score with a fine point and followed that up with one from a free. Our girls were playing well against the wind with Gemma Morris as sweeper clearing a lot of ball. Ciara and Stephaine were wining there share of ball in the middle of the field and after some fine work by Ciara and Ceri, we got they ball up to Judy whose shot was half blocked but captain Jessica reacted quickest and slammed the ball home. This gave the team a great boost and everyone upped there game with Alana, Alice and jannete very prominent in defence. Shannon had to replace the injured Aileen Duggan. Holycross tagged on two more points before half time but due to the hard work of Amy, Cathriona and Claire they never created any goal chances although Zoey was very alert to any danger. half time score Nenagh 1-0 holycross 0-4.   The girls were relaxed at half time but they knew the job was only half done and  were very focused on what was to be done. One good half hour and they would be County Champions.

A little pep-talk at half time sent them on there way. Gemma was now back at wing forward after her great 1st half and Shannon was in the corner. holycross started the 2nd half well but Alice, who marked there star player all day, and janette started to drive balls back 60 yards to keep the pressure off. As so many times this year when we needed a score, Ciara popped up with a cracking goal and a point. This eased the tension and every girl till the end of the match pulled out all the stops. Stephaine, Colleen and Ceri kept the ball moving in and Judy, Jessica and Shannon caused loads of problems inside. Shannon then got a lovely goal after good work by Ceri and Gemma put over a lovely point. Ciara then pointed a free and we started thinking about the trophy, but, Holycross showed what a good team they are when the broke up the field and scored a goal. This spurred our girls on again and further goals by Ciara and Shannon were surpassed but a wonderful goal from Gemma Morris. Aileen was now back on for Coleen and Laura Doherty for Amy Darcy. Judy grabbed a point before being replaced by Aishling King. Caitlin Shoer replaced Gemma and to cap the day Janette Collins came up the field to score two great points. Just reward for the great game she had. We also have to praise the girls who didn't get to play but who worked just as hard and had played in other games this year, Lauren Glennon, Aoife Hynes, Amy Heffernan and Aine Long. The Club has worked very hard for this day and every one who was part of it for the last six years can take a little bit of the credit. The people lucky enough to work with these girls this year were selectors Martin, Cora and Rebecca. Trainer Mike Ryan and Coach Emma Ryan wish to thank these girls, there parents, the Club and everyone who helped make these girls dream come true.
